AUSTRALIAN Openly Gay diver Matthew Mitcham has ended host nation China's stranglehold on the Beijing Olympic diving competition to win a shock gold medal in the men's 10m platform infront of his proud partner.
The 20-year-old Sydney diver produced a sensational final dive to become Australia's first male Olympic gold medallist in diving since Dick Eve won the plain high diving event in 1924.
Mitcham achieved an overall score of 537.95 to defeat China's Zhou Luxin (530.15), who had led the final until the final round, to grab Australia's second diving medal of the Games.
Matthew of course came out just weeks prior to departing for the games and applied for a grant from the government to pay for his partner to accompany him. He had so much support from the GLBT community that one supporter had promised to pay the A$5000.00 to ensure his partner could be by his side.
